Free network scanner for host discovery, port scanning and service/OS detection.

Nmap ("Network Mapper") calls itself "a free and open source utility for network discovery and security auditing". Its site says it uses raw IP packets to determine what hosts are available on a network, what services those hosts are offering, what operating systems they are running and what type of packet filters or firewalls are in use. The suite also includes the Zenmap GUI, Ncat, Ndiff and Nping.
